GAME 2: Early runs prove pivotal, as Panthers put on brink
KITCHENER - Mateo Zeppieri hit a two-run home run in the sixth, but it is all the Panthers could get off Euclides Leyer.
The Welland starter struck out four and gave up four hits in six innings as the Jackfish took Game 2 Friday night 7-2.
James Smibert took advantage of the smaller ballpark, just squeaking one over the left field fence to give Welland a 2-0 lead in the first.
The visitors doubled its lead in the second, as they wore down a savvy Owen MacNeil.
MacNeil struck out five, but gave up six runs on 10 hits in five innings in the loss.
Ricardo Alvarez De Lugo gave up just two hits in the final four innings, trying to keep Kitchener in it.
But the Panthers couldn't get the bats going beyond the Zeppieri homer.
Now, the Panthers find themselves on the brink of elimination.
Kitchener goes into Welland Saturday at 6:05 p.m. with its season on the line. Game 4, if necessary, is Tuesday at Jack Couch Park at 7:30 p.m.
