GAME 2: Welland routs Kitchener to tie series

KITCHENER - After a tight, low scoring ball game to open the series 24 hours earlier, the defending IBL champions saw its offense return to form in Game 2.

After an RBI double from Raul Gonzalez opened the scoring in the first, it was all Welland after that in a 14-1 final at Jack Couch Park Friday night to tie their first round best-of-five series at one game a piece.

While the Jackfish scored four runs in each of the second, third and sixth innings, Teodoro Ortega kept Kitchener in check to collect the win on the mound.

Ortega went seven innings, giving up the run on five Panthers hits and struck out six.

Three of those hits came from Gonzalez. Spenser Ross and Ryan Burnside had the other two on the night.

Gonzalez's lead off single in the sixth was the last hit Kitchener would get, though the Panthers did get two more base runners on walks.

Jose Vasquez took the loss. He left after going three innings, giving up 11 hits and eight runs, walking two and striking out four.

Welland would get 19 hits in the game, including five from Jonah Weisner, who is hitting .727 in the series.

The game saw a 15 minute delay after the house lights went out from what's believed to be a power surge.

Kitchener will host Game 4 next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., and it will be an elimination game for one team.

Who will be on the brink will be determined Saturday at 6:05 p.m. in Welland for Game 3.
