Panthers routed by new-look Royals
KITCHENER - It seems like the Guelph Royals like hitting at Jack Couch Park.
Guelph sent 13 batters to the plate in the sixth and scored nine runs, part of a 19-7 drubbing of the Kitchener Panthers Sunday afternoon.
The Royals and Panthers went back and forth for the first five innings, with Guelph holding a slim one-run lead heading into their big inning.
Franklin Torres led the way with six hits for Guelph, including a home run in his second game back in the league.
Keinner Pena was three-for-six with two home runs and eight RBI in his IBL debut.
Antonio Frias went three innings and struck out three in his IBL debut for Guelph. Former IBL MVP Claudio Custodio gave up five unearned runs in four innings and got the win in his first game back.
Guelph hit five home runs in the game. Kitchener responded with long balls from Yordan Manduley and Nico Kyrose.
Andy Vargas gave up 10 runs (eight earned) on 12 hits in 5.1 innings in the loss.
Kitchener has the season series advantage, winning three of five games, but Guelph would win a potential tiebreaker on head-to-head runs if the Royals win their final meeting of the season in the last week of the year.
Kitchener is home to Brantford on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
