Panthers split home doubleheader with Baycats
KITCHENER – The Kitchener Panthers picked up their seventh road victory of the season on Sunday ... at Jack Couch Park.
It was a day of doubleheaders in the CBL. Due to their scheduled meeting in Barrie Saturday being rained out, and Barrie being in Kitchener Sunday anyway, the teams played two seven-inning games.
Six was the magic number for the winning side, as the Baycats took the opener 6-3.
Baycats pitcher Saul Vasquez threw 115 pitches to record his fifth win of the season.
The star in the first game for Kitchener was Trent Lawson, who knocked his seventh and eighth home runs of the season. One came in the bottom of the seventh, with the Panthers down to their final out.
In the second game, the Panthers played as the visitors and got a solid home debut from Trey Cruz.
The Florida native went four innings, while striking out three and didn't issue a walk.
His early showing, combined with three stellar innings from Jake Liberta, gave the Panthers a 6-5 'road' win.
Liberta picked up the victory on the mound, for his first win in the CBL.
Kitchener exploded for four runs in the first three innings, holding the Baycats scoreless for three.
Malik Williams smacked two home runs in the second game, including a three-run shot that gave the Panthers a 4-0
lead in the first.
Yosvani Penalver added power from the other side of the plate, belting a homer of his own.
Kitchener moved to 13-25 on the season, while Barrie sits at 21-15.
The Panthers will be back in action in Kitchener on Wednesday night, for a 7:05 p.m. start with the Brantford Red Sox.
