Pitching battle doesn't go the Panthers way
KITCHENER - A low scoring battle, but the Kitchener Panthers drop its second straight game.
Ryan Dos Santos' early three-run home run turned out to be the difference as the Toronto Maple Leafs take a 5-2 decision at Jack Couch Park.
It was a pitchers' battle for the most part, as Andy Vargas and Josh Berenbaum kept the offense at bay on both sides.
Vargas finished with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work in the loss. He gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and walked two.
Berenbaum gave up just two hits in six innings and struck out eight Kitchener batters.
The Panthers had the tying run at the plate in the ninth, but Dustin Richardson got the out he needed for the save.
Kitchener drops to 2-3 on the season, while Toronto improves to 2-3.
Kitchener hosts Brantford on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a make up game for last Thursday's rain out.
